Context and Impact
Father Mike Murphy from Our Lady of Victory, who has deep personal connections to Southwest Baltimore, emphasizes the program's role in creating a culture of peace within the community. Over the past two years, the Archdiocese's gun buyback events have removed more than 600 firearms from Baltimore streets.
The Catholic community has raised over $100,000 during this period to fund both the buyback initiatives and support families affected by homicide through the Archdiocese's Grief Ministry.
While organizers acknowledge that gun buybacks alone do not solve violent crime, they believe these events contribute to community safety. The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis during designated hours and provides residents with a safe disposal option for unwanted firearms.
