The City of Hoboken has announced a gun buyback initiative for June 22, 2024. The Saturday event will be hosted by the Hoboken Police Department and was organized in response to recent gun violence in the community, particularly following the tragic shooting death of former Hoboken High School athlete Damon Murray in April.Event ResultsDate: Saturday, June 22, 2024Time: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.Location: Hoboken Police Headquarters, 106 Hudson StreetCompensation Scale: Assault weapons/illegal firearms: $350 eachHandguns (semi-automatic/revolver): $250 eachRifles/shotguns: $200 eachInoperable weapons: $40 eachBB guns excluded from compensationParticipation ProtocolThe program allows residents to voluntarily surrender up to three firearms per person with no questions asked and no identification required. Participants are asked to register in advance by signing up online, picking up a form at police headquarters, or printing a form from the HPD website. Instead of identity, the registration is for the firearms to be listed on the form. Participants will receive immediate cash payment following the surrender of their weapons.ContextThe buyback initiative was developed in direct response to the fatal shooting of Damon Murray, a 21-year-old former Rutgers University student and local football star. Murray was shot outside a city public housing complex on April 28, 2024. Prior to Murray's death, it had been nearly three years since Hoboken had experienced a homicide. Mayor Ravi Bhalla acknowledged that while Hoboken doesn't typically experience high levels of gun violence compared to other cities, "even one shooting death in our City is one too many."The event is funded by the City of Hoboken using American Rescue Plan funding and received approval from New Jersey's Office of the Attorney General.
